SCHLAUCH – MAKING NOISE HABITABLE

installation art, sound, video, vinyl box release

May 13 – 21, 2022, 8 p.m.
RHIZOM homebase, Annenstraße 52, 8020 Graz, Austria

SCHLAUCH was founded in Graz in 1991 with the aim of developing and constructing sound machines, control units, trigger circuits and feedback systems on an analogue basis. The term music was abandoned in favor of the enhanced term sound generation. Experiments in the extreme range with organic material – mainly with the own body – became trend-setting for the work of the collective. SCHLAUCHs public performances became intensive situations, spaces were condensed by radical constructions, olfactory worlds were created and all sensory organs, starting from the ear, were attacked. Where radicalization is consistently pursued, the break that SCHLAUCH also experienced towards 1997 happens sooner or later:
The exhaustion of styles and acoustic monstrosity was at its limit, the collective dissipated. What is happening here at RHIZOM is not a nostalgic idealization, but the construction of a reference space with ascending and descending intensities/audiovisual abnormalities that are meant to envision: SCHLAUCH even works without a reunion.
