The draft of a graphic novel as a walk-in space

Drawings, sketches and texts for the project, which is an illustrated narrative, written by a certain Lalo Palerme. The final form will probably be a book or a comic. Here, the material forms grit in space. It is about a fake brother, about visual and humorous pseudo-historical simulations, about original, copy and fake, in short: analogous artistry. The undaunted sensual imitation, openly discussed, shows the deficits of digitally disseminated fake narratives and replaces the theatric political with the steady, inherent scandal of art.
[…] Giving up certain cultural techniques without good cause is certainly not the smart thing to do. Writing with your own hand gives you time to develop your thoughts, opinions and certainties. You do this with the very same slate pencil you used to engrave your first scribbles on cardboard and paper and which – posthaste – became real drawings. You can understand the things of the world better if you draw them, outline them, depict them, in short: imbibe them. In this respect, you should eat art with all your senses. Otherwise: Except for dying, one must do exactly nothing.

László Varvasovszky
born in 1947 in Vienna, where he lives and works as an author, illustrator and musician. Publishes mainly children’s books since 1978, which he texts and illustrates. Previously worked as stage designer and exhibition designer in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Graz was his center of life and work from 1972 – 1995, initially four years at Stages Graz (Bühnen Graz), from 1973 on at the University (then “Hochschule”/Academy) of Music and Performing Arts as a University assistant and lecturer.
