The exhibition roaming at RHIZOM
A musical composition seems to be something closed/completed, but it is always open in many directions: it is determined by factors such as cultural memory, the understanding of performers and of listeners, the interaction between them, the performance venue, and many more. Tracing these connections and hinges, composer Katharina Klement provides insights into the genesis of some of her works. During a concluding lecture performance the audience has the opportunity to experience the genesis of the new work “Monde II”, created for musikprotokoll 2023, also sensually.

The bodies of sound – instrumental ensemble, electronics and two concrete mixing machines – combine to a complex amalgam, an almost inseparable tonal blend. At the same time, they harbor an oscillating plurality with their varied reference systems; analogous to the imagined model of several moons individually circling to form an open totality, they create their own interconnected “monde” (world).

The piece is a continuation of the composition “Monde, nein keinerlei Gezeiten aber Geraume” with a similar lineup, created in 1997/98 and performed at several venues.

Katharina Klement
was born in Graz and has lived in Vienna since the late 1980s. She works as a composer-performer in the fields of composed and improvised, electronic and instrumental music. In her works there are numerous cross connections to the media of text and video. She is particularly interested in the piano and the playing techniques emhanced for it. She is founder and member of several ensembles for improvised music. Klement is considered a clearly contoured voice in New Music with international concerts and performances. She has collaborated with various ensembles such as ensemble recherche, Klangforum Wien, PHACE, Schallfeld, Lizard, airborne extended and numerous artists.
